What are private plates all about?

The first private plates system in the world began in Baden, Germany in 1896. Great Britain introduced compulsory private plates on 1st January 1904. A system had to be thought up to make the growing number of car drivers accountable for their vehicles and their actions on the roads. One of the ideas considered was to give a private plates to each car – like ships. Fortunately this wasn’t used! And the private plates was born.

Registration private plates were issued in Great Britain as early as August 1903, but it was in December 1903 that the London County Council issued the first London mark, A 1, to Earl Russell.
